  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 200 grams shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 large eggs
  • 240 milliliters whole milk
  • 100 grams all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoons butter (for greasing)

Steps

Preheat and prep: Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Grease a 23cm (9-inch) pie dish or round baking dish with 1 tablespoons butter (for greasing).2

Cook the beef: In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook 500 grams ground beef and 1 medium onion, finely chopped together, breaking the meat up as it cooks. Season with 1 teaspoons salt, 0.5 teaspoons black pepper, and 0.5 teaspoons garlic powder. Drain any excess fat and set aside.3

Make the batter: In a bowl, whisk together 3 large eggs, 240 milliliters whole milk, 100 grams all-purpose flour, and 1 teaspoons baking powder until smooth and lump-free.4

Layer the filling: Spread the cooked beef mixture evenly across the bottom of the greased dish. Scatter half of 200 grams shredded cheddar cheese over the meat.5

Pour the batter: Pour the batter evenly over the beef and cheese. Top with the remaining 200 grams shredded cheddar cheese.6

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven until the top is deeply golden and the center is set.7

Rest and serve: Remove from the oven and let rest before slicing into wedges and serving.
