Homemade German Chocolate Cake

Ingredients:
For the Cake:

1/2 cup boiling water
4 ounces sweet cooking German chocolate
2 cups sugar
1 cup butter, softened
4 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups cake flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
4 egg whites, stiffly beaten
For the Coconut Pecan Frosting:

1 cup sugar (or 1 1/2 cups for a sweeter frosting)
1/2 cup butter (or 3/4 cups for a richer frosting)
1 cup evaporated milk (1 12-oz can)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or 1 1/2 teaspoons for extra flavor)
3 egg yolks (or 4 egg yolks for a thicker frosting)
1 1/3 cups flaked coconut (or 2 cups for more texture)
1 cup chopped pecans (or 1 1/2 cups for more crunch)
Directions:
1. Preheat the Oven:

Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch square pans or three 8-inch round pans.
2. Prepare the Cake Batter:

Pour boiling water over the German chocolate, stirring until melted; let cool.
In a large mixing bowl, cream the sugar and softened butter until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolks one at a time.
Mix in the melted chocolate and vanilla extract on low speed.
Alternately add the cake flour, baking soda, and salt with the buttermilk, beating after each addition until smooth.
Gently fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites until well incorporated.
3. Bake the Cake:

Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans.
Bake the square pans for 40-45 minutes or the round pans for 35-40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.
4. Make the Coconut Pecan Frosting:

In a saucepan, combine the sugar, butter, evaporated milk, vanilla extract, and egg yolks.
Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 12 minutes.
Remove from heat and stir in the flaked coconut and chopped pecans.
Beat the mixture until it reaches a spreading consistency and allow it to cool and thicken before frosting the cake.
5. Assemble the Cake:

Place one cake layer on a serving plate, spread a generous amount of coconut pecan frosting on top.
Repeat with remaining layers, finishing with the frosting on top of the final layer.
Optionally, frost the sides of the cake with chocolate frosting or additional coconut pecan frosting.
Enjoy this decadent German Chocolate Cake at your next family gathering or special occasion!
